Hello 2017

Last year was definitely the hardest year of my life. I can’t even begin to explain. I would be here all day. Hopefully, this year will be better. I decided to share my ‘resolutions’ for the year (and beyond).

1. Let’s start with the eating goals. I love tea and my cupboard is full of different varieties, yet I never seem to drink much. Black, herbal, fruity.. you name it, I probably have it! These teas feel like a treat to me and I need to take the time to enjoy a cup at least a few times a week. Some of them have fantastic benefits for the body too. My favourite at the moment is anything with lavender. Perfect for calming moments.

2. Try more foods. I have a ridiculous amount of food intolerances and I wasn’t sure exactly what they were for so long. This made me fearful of food and I only stuck to eating things which I knew were ‘safe’. Thanks to an amazing intolerance test with Foods You Can, I can see which items are okay for me to eat and which I should avoid. It really has helped and I will be doing a post about my experience in the near future. Fresh food is easier to deal with but packaged things – not so much. From having a limited diet, I’m not sure what I enjoy and I wish to explore this!

3. One of my main goals is to stay more organised. I am pretty good at keeping things together in this sense but I really need to keep on top of things better. Whether it’s knowing when appointments are, sending e-mails or tracking parcels, I definitely need to be more efficient at this. I think we all could benefit from this. I have bought myself this beautiful diary from Busy B which is great for keeping organised and perfect for families too. I love the design. I also purchased these super cute stickers from Dorkface to make my planning more fun. Three different packs were purchased and there are lots more that you can get. There are some of my favourites. I especially love that there are mermaids in wheelchairs!

4. Write more. I enjoy sharing my opinions and experiences but I haven’t been able to do much lately and I would like to be more creative in this way. Also, to be more personal about it.

5. Read at least once a week. Concentrating is difficult for me due to my Ehlers Danlos Syndrome but reading can be a good distraction. I’m not talking about anything big such as long books; but magazines. It’s important to have time away from screens.

6. Pamper! My goal for the new year for so many years was to stop biting my nails. I had done it all of my life and managed to stop a few years ago. It was an anxiety issue and I conquered it. I want to paint my nails more often to remind myself that I have got past this and to take care of myself. It can be a mood booster. The motivation isn’t quite there but I’m working on it!

7. Get crafty! I studied art and textiles throughout school and further education but since my health deteriorated, I lost this creative outlet. My hands hurt to draw but I’m looking into getting grips and finding other ways to be creative. If anyone has any tips, please let me know what has helped you. This cute print from Dorkface inspires me to make something beautiful. The creator, Jemma is super sweet and you should definitely check her out if you haven’t already. 8. Go outside. As a disabled individual, I don’t get to go out very often. I couldn’t tell you the last time I went out for something other than a medical appointment. The world outside has become an unfamiliar place and I want to rediscover it. I know that it isn’t going to be easy, but I really want to try. Fresh air, different scenery; it’s healthy. This is something that many people take for granted and I would love to be able to appreciate it.

9. Don’t sweat the small stuff. Life is really stressful for me and I often wake in the night worrying about things. They aren’t always big things and it’s unhealthy to live this way. I’m not going to worry about what people think and move on from negative situations and individuals. I will fill my mind with pleasant things.

10. Be brave. Every day is a battle with constant pain and worry of how things are going to turn out. I get worse frequently. It’s time to stop just using that brave face I put on, but to actually be that person inside too. Whether it be travelling to an unknown place, facing nasty medical tests or having the confidence to talk to that intimidating person; I can do it, and so can you.

  1. Some fantastic goals! How are you getting on with them? I’m so glad that you’ve been able to identify your food intolerances. I know how hard it is to eat interesting foods with a restricted diet.
